Oakville, ON: Genetic Testing for Breast Cancer

Many women are concerned about their chances of developing breast cancer. Genetic testing for breast cancer, including BRCA1 and BRCA2, can be done to identify women who are at a very high risk of developing breast cancer in the future, before the cancer develops. This gives us the opportunity to prevent these cancers before they occur. However, in Canada, genetic testing is only available to select individuals, primarily those with a strong family history of cancer. In this talk, Prof. Metcalfe will discuss the basics of breast cancer, the risks and benefits of genetic testing, and explore the idea of making genetic testing for BRCA1 and BRCA2 available to all Canadians who want this information.
