U of T alumni and friends are invited to a thought-provoking talk by
Professor Richard Florida
Rotman School of Management, University of Toronto

Richard Florida is one of the world's leading urbanists. He is a researcher and professor, serving as University Professor and Director of Cities at the Martin Institute at the University of Toronto. He is a writer and journalist of global best sellers, including the award winning The Rise of the Creative Class, and his most recent book, The New Urban Crisis, published in April 2017. He serves as a senior editor for The Atlantic and Editor-at-Large for the publication's CityLab, and hosts a Twitter account (@Richard_Florida), that has attracted over 195K followers. As an entrepreneur and founder of the Creative Class Group, he works closely with companies and governments worldwide.

In this talk, Professor Florida will discuss his outlook on the City of Toronto's prospects for the future, and how his interest in cities and urbanisim began. Through his life experience growing up in Newark, New Jersey, Prof. Florida watched the city decline and explode into riots, and witnessed events like the factory where his father worked close its doors. Throughout his academic career, beginning with his graduate school years in New York City, he witnessed the first tender-shoots of the urban revival. Later in Pittsburgh at Carnegie Mellon, he saw his students and faculty colleagues leaving the region, which later informed his work on The Rise of the Creative Class. Finally, Prof. Florida will discuss how his research and the writing of his latest book, The New Urban Crisis, was shaped by his decade in Toronto, including his time at the University of Toronto.

We will be live-streaming this talk for anyone who cannot attend in-person. You can watch the live-stream HERE at 6:50 pm EDT. This talk will also be archived at the link above, so viewers may watch at their own convenience.
