Elisabeth McGregor
2016 winner of the Carl Mitchell Award for Community Engagement
Elisabeth McGregor (BA 1978 UTSC, MSW 1984) has made a lasting impact on the community of Mississauga, helping to found a community outreach centre (The Compass) in 2002. Since then, she has volunteered more than 10,000 hours as an intake counsellor, serving in that role every Monday, Wednesday and Friday for 14 years, helping address the physical and emotional needs of people asking for help.
The Compass offers free programming from counselling services to financial literacy workshops to English classes to a food bank. Lis founded it with her husband Brian McGoey, with a vision of ensuring each visitor, from the start, knows they will be listened to.
The University of Toronto Alumni Association honoured Lis with the Carl Mitchell Award for Community Engagement in 2016.
