Carl Mitchell Award for Community Engagement winner

Kimberley Tull

2017 winner of the Carl Mitchell Award for Community Engagement

Kimberley Tull (BA 2000 UTSC, MEd 2013) is a passionate voice for inclusiveness and community. As a student in the 1990s, she helped develop the City of Pickering’s race relations policy. In 2003, she co-founded Black Pearls Community Services, Inc., a nonprofit organization helping young women in the Toronto-area Black, West Indian and African community pursue their leadership potential through education and community-strengthening events and programs.

Since coming to work at U of T, first in alumni relations and now as U of T Scarborough’s community engagement manager, Kimberley has established programs and created events that raise awareness and remove barriers. She was involved in re-establishing the University of Toronto Black Alumni Association, and is a key organizer for International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination events, and received the True Blue award from U of T HR and Equity for her outstanding dedication to inclusion, equity, diversity and individual empowerment.

Among her achievements, Kimberley developed the award-winning SHAKER program for young alumni, as well as the Hire Power event for final-year students entering the workforce. And she co-created UTSC’s Community University Partnership model, which links student volunteers with charities and service agencies in Scarborough. The program has created dozens of successful interactions that benefit both students and the community, from a homework club to soccer camps to classes on water conservation.

Kimberley is a sought-after speaker on race, gender, equality, community, identity and collaboration, and frequently shares her expertise at workshops and conferences. The University of Toronto Alumni Association is proud to honour Kimberley with the Carl Mitchell Award for Community Engagement in 2017.
