Keynote Talk: Teaching Self-Driving Cars to Handle Adverse Weather
How do autonomous vehicle (AV) fleets navigate complex and immensely varied human driving environments? In his talk, U of T professor Steven L. Waslander will explore the challenges and progress made in deploying AV fleets in winter driving conditions. He'll also present emerging methods for predicting the perception uncertainty associated with each driving scene a vehicle encounters. As AV fleets expand across North America, teaching self-driving cars to handle adverse weather conditions – while learning their perception limitations – will support efforts in learning based autonomy.
About Professor Waslander
A Professor at the University of Toronto Institute for Aerospace Studies, Steven L. Waslander is a leading authority on autonomous aerial and ground vehicles, including multirotor drones and self-driving cars. He is the director of the Toronto Robotics and AI Laboratory, where he investigates perception systems for autonomous mobile robotics. Prof. Waslander's work has resulted in the Autonomoose, the first autonomous vehicle created at a Canadian university to drive on public roads. He received his BASc (1998) from Queen’s University, and both his MS (2002) and PhD (2007) in aeronautics and astronautics from Stanford University.
