Professor Sam Maglio
Rotman School of Management, University of Toronto
Department of Management, University of Toronto Scarborough
Intuition gets a bad rap. Conventional wisdom insists that we reign in our emotions and scrutinize every decision. Deliberation has a role to play at the right time and place, but so too do our feelings. When people allow themselves to go with their gut, what happens? Cutting-edge research in psychology, marketing, and behavioral economics is starting to offer answers to this question, and Professor Maglio will explore the experimental evidence that prescribes a little more listening to the heart over the head. When relying on their gut feelings, people make more accurate choices and end up more satisfied with their choices in the long-run. In Professor Maglio’s latest work, relying on feelings in deciding, for example, where to go for dinner causes people to see the restaurant they choose as reflective of who they really are deep down inside, becoming more certain of their choice and more likely to share it on social media. This talk will introduce a little more intuition into our everyday lives.
Professor Maglio's presentation is part of an ongoing series of compelling lectures for alumni, hosted at venues across the GTA. U of T in Your Neighbourhood brings the university right into your community, keeping you informed, inspired and connected.
