The Hart House Orchestra is celebrating its 40th anniversary by performing in New York City, and U of T alumni and friends are invited to attend this special occasion! The program, From Creation to Rhapsody, includes Canadian and American symphonic pieces to honour both countries and is rounded out by Brahms' Symphony No. 1. This orchestra, made up of U of T students, alumni, faculty, staff and Hart House senior members, is led by talented conductor Henry Janzen. After the performance U of T alumni and friends are invited to attend a meet and greet dinner with members of Hart House Orchestra at McGee's Restaurant & Pub. Ottawa, ON: EXPLORING THE ROOTS OF THE VINE
Dr. Stephen Batiuk will show how new archaeological fieldwork, as well as bio-molecular chemistry and genetics, are helping to unlock this story, pushing its origins back to the Neolithic period and to the region of Caucasia, modern Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan. He will also explore how one of our earlier and best-documented examples of an ancient migration led to the spread of wine and wine culture across Ancient Near East, and then eventually across the rest of the Mediterranean World.
SHAKER Ed-Beyond the Border
Lurking in Michael Moore's satirical look at Canada-United States border relations are questions about our relationship with the US.Since 9/11, our countries have worked hard to keep the border open to trade but closed to threats. Professor Gilbert's lecture responds to Canadian Bacon in light of the new American President and increased security, asking the question: has our collaboration gone too far?
