U of T alumni and friends are invited to a dinner and thought-provoking presentation by

Professor Peter Loewen
Director, School of Public Policy and Governance, University of Toronto
Former Director, Centre for the Study of the United States and American Studies program, Munk School of Global Affairs, University of Toronto

North America has changed remarkably since the signing of the Free Trade Agreement in 1988 and NAFTA in 1992. From a northern perspective, Canadians are more likely to travel to the United States, purchase American-made goods, cross the US border for work, and consume American culture. Americans are likewise greater buyers of Canadian goods and services and more frequent visitors to Canada, and yet, despite deeper commercial engagement between the two countries, we are witnessing decreasing political goodwill and increasing odds that NAFTA will be substantially revised.

Professor Loewen's talk will explain this growing divide by focussing on three factors: diverging cultural values, differing approaches to immigration and diversity, and widening differences in our approaches to politics, both domestic and international. All three of these factors matter not only for our politics, but also for the future of trade between Canada and the United States.

Prof. Loewen's presentation is part of an ongoing series of compelling lectures for alumni, hosted in cities around the world. U of T Where You Are brings the university right into your community. Stay informed, inspired and connected, because together we are boundless.
