Prof. Charles Hostovsky, PhD, MCIP (BA 1983 WDW) will lead an engaging talk on a comparative evaluation of public transit's past, present, and future role in the gentrification of two of North America's most diverse and important urban centres, Washington, D.C. and Toronto. Public investment in the form of rapid transportation systems stimulates "smart growth", but also plays a vital role in the process of gentrification, resulting in large scale loss of ethnic minorities in DC and, inversely, an increase in diversity in Toronto. Prof. Hostovsky explores the strategies for social equity in city-making, opening up the discussion to the local community and engaging citizens in the latest developments.
