Join fellow U of T alumni and friends for a self-guided tour of the richly layered work of Firelei Báez

Join us for a self-guided exploration of Firelei Báez at the Vancouver Art Gallery, the first mid-career survey of one of the most exciting painters of her generation. This exhibition delves into the historical narratives of the Atlantic Basin, exploring colonial histories, the African diaspora, and cultural mythologies.
Báez’s work blends anthropology, folklore, and fantasy, using vibrant, layered paintings and sculptural installations to challenge ideas of race, gender, and nationality. Her intricate, exuberant art transforms colonial-era maps with vivid patterns, storytelling, and mythmaking, offering a striking vision of resilience and reimagined histories.
