How close are we to sending humans to Mars? Human exploration of the red planet has been seriously discussed since the 1940s, but no mission concept has gone beyond the planning stage. Why?
Join Maria Zuber — the first woman to lead a science department at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the first to lead a NASA planetary mission — as she explores the possibility of a human expedition to Mars at the 2024 annual Martin Lecture, hosted by the David A. Dunlap Department of Astronomy & Astrophysics and the Faculty of Arts & Science.
“A Human Expedition to Mars” will consider the latest information from science and technology to assess what challenges remain with transporting humans to Mars. Considering the state of know-how supporting this interplanetary journey, the first person to walk on Mars may have already been born.
Named one of the 50 most important women in science by Discover magazine, Zuber has held leadership roles on 10 NASA missions, is co-chair of U.S. President Biden’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology, and serves as the E. A. Griswold Professor of Geophysics and vice-president for research at MIT.
The Martin Lecture series is held annually, welcoming top thinkers and researchers in Astronomy & Astrophysics, Ecology & Evolutionary Biology, Physics, and Public Policy to the University of Toronto.
