Sana Halwani

Sana leads Lenczner Slaght’s Intellectual Property group. She represents diverse clients in patent, copyright, and trademark matters in various industries including pharmaceutical and biologics, information technology, telecommunications, media, and energy.  Sana has represented clients at all levels of the Ontario and Federal courts, including the Supreme Court of Canada, and regularly provides strategic patent and regulatory advice. She also has extensive experience as part of international teams litigating large cross-border disputes.  Sana has been recognized for her professional expertise by prominent ranking publications including Chambers, Lexpert, and IAM Patent 1000.

As Chair of her firm’s Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Committee and co-founder of ReferToHer™, a groundbreaking program that helps keep women top of mind for referrals, Sana is a leading advocate for EDI in the legal profession. She has also played a crucial role in shaping the future of Lenczner Slaght as the inaugural Chair of the Innovation Hive™.

Prior to her time at the University of Toronto, Sana received a BSc in Biochemistry from Queen’s University, and a MA in Biotechnological Law and Ethics from the University of Sheffield, UK. She also clerked for The Honourable Rosalie Abella, Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada.

Sana has been very involved in the University of Toronto community since joining it as a student. Her contributions during her legal studies garnered her the Dean’s Key, as well as a Gordon Cressy Student Leadership Award. Since graduating, Sana has taken on numerous roles at the university including member of the Defy Gravity Campaign Steering Committee; Associate Chair of the University of Toronto Discipline Tribunal; member of the College of Electors; member of the Law Alumni Association; trial advocacy instructor at the Faculty of Law; and alumni mentor. In 2012, she was the recipient of an Arbor Award for her service to the University. Sana lives in Toronto with her husband, two sons, and her Australian Shepherd puppy.
