Alumni E-Mail Accounts - Terms of Use

Use of an Alumni e-mail account (hereafter referred to as "the Account") is jointly subject to Google's User Agreement  and the University of Toronto's Terms of Use for Alumni e-mail accounts. While the University of Toronto endeavours to make the Account available to you for as long as you wish to use it, the University cannot and does not make any guarantees or warranties of such, due to the nature of changing technologies and markets.

Account prefixes must contain your name. Names of companies, or non-identifying prefixes (e.g. "hellothere@alumni.utoronto.ca") are not allowed.

By requesting and/or logging into a University of Toronto alumni e-mail account, you agree to the following terms:

Compliance with Laws and Prohibited Conduct

You agree to comply with all applicable laws, rules, regulations, and policies (“Laws”) and acknowledge that you may only use the Account if, and to the extent that, such use is permitted by such Laws.

You agree not to engage in any conduct as a user of the Account that the University, in its sole discretion, determines to be detrimental to the interests of the University (“Prohibited Conduct”). Without limiting the generality of the foregoing, you agree that when using the communication services, you will not:

  • Use the services in connection with surveys, contests, pyramid schemes, chain letters, junk e-mail, spamming or any duplicative messages (commercial or otherwise).
  • Use the services to falsely represent or imply any commercial, promotional, political, or institutional affiliation with the University of Toronto
  • Defame, abuse, harass, stalk, threaten or otherwise violate the legal rights (such as rights of privacy and publicity) of others.
  • Publish, post, upload, distribute or disseminate any inappropriate, profane, defamatory, obscene, indecent or unlawful topic, name, material or information.
  • Restrict or inhibit any other user from using and enjoying the services.
  • Harvest or otherwise collect information about others, including e-mail addresses.
  • Violate any applicable laws or regulations.
  • Create a false identity for the purpose of misleading others, or otherwise impersonate another individual.
  • Interfere with or disrupt the service or servers or networks connected to the service, or disobey any requirements, procedures, policies or regulations of networks connected to the service.
  • Violate any code of conduct, terms of use, or other guidelines which may be applicable, such as those outlined in the Google user agreement.

International Use

Recognizing the global nature of the Internet, you agree to comply with all local rules regarding online conduct and acceptable content. Specifically, you agree to comply with all applicable laws regarding the transmission of technical data exported from Canada or the country in which you reside.

Disclaimer of Warranties

The Account is provided on a strictly “as is” and “as available” basis. The University makes no warranty whatsoever with regard to the Account, that the Account will meet your requirements or that information exchanged, obtained or posted on or through the Account will be accurate, reliable, timely, secure or error free, nor does the University make any warranty as to the results that may be obtained from the use of the Account. The University expressly disclaims any and all express and implied warranties in connection with the Account, including, but not limited to, implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement. No advice or information, whether oral or written, obtained by you directly or indirectly from the University or through the Account shall create any warranty not expressly made herein. The University assumes no responsibility for unavailability of the Account due to interruptions or discontinuance of service for any reason.

The Account, and e-mail obtained thereby, may contain advertisements. The University neither endorses the contents of third party advertisements or web Accounts, nor assumes responsibility or liability for the accuracy of information or material contained therein, or for any infringement of third parties' intellectual property rights arising therefrom or for any fraud or other criminal activity facilitated thereby. The University shall not be liable or responsible for the offers, guarantees, warranties or representations, if any, of its advertisers, sponsors, partners or other third parties. Information, statements, advice, opinions or other content provided by third parties is the sole responsibility of their respective authors, and the University assumes no responsibility for your reliance on any such content.

If you choose to purchase any products or services from a third party through the Account, your relationship is directly with the third party. You agree that the Account is not responsible for: (a) the quality of third party products or services; and (b) fulfilling any of the terms of your agreement with the seller, including delivery of products or services and warranty obligations related to purchased products or services. You agree that the Account is not responsible or liable, directly or indirectly, for any loss or damage of any sort you may incur from dealing with any third party.

Any content or other material downloaded or otherwise obtained through your use of the Account is at your own risk and you will be solely responsible for any damage to your computer system or loss of data that results from any such material.

Limitation of Liability

The University shall not be liable for any damages, whether direct, indirect, incidental, special or consequential, or damages for loss of profits, revenue, data, goodwill or use, incurred by you or any third party, whether in an action in contract or tort, arising from your access to, use of or inability to use the Account or reliance on or use of information obtained through the Account even if the University has been advised of the possibility of such damages. In no event shall the University 's aggregate liability to you exceed CDN$100.00.

Loss of Email Access Due to Account Abandonment

When an email account is abandoned by an individual, they are no longer considered eligible to use that account. An individual is deemed to have abandoned their account if they have not successfully logged into the account over a period of six months. Logging-in means successfully connecting to Gmail or Drive.

Termination

You may terminate your user registration at any time by submitting a termination request to support@alumni.utoronto.ca containing a secondary e-mail address where you may be contacted. Termination shall be effective upon the University’s delivery to you of an e‑mail confirmation to your secondary e-mail address that your registration has been terminated. Your right to use the Account immediately ceases upon termination of your registration.

The University reserves the right to immediately terminate your Account where the University determines, in its sole discretion that you have, or appear to be, engaged in Prohibited Conduct or have otherwise acted, or failed to act, in a manner contrary to this User Agreement as amended from time to time. The University’s decisions with respect to termination of your registration are final. The University shall have no liability to you in connection with the termination of your registration.

The University reserves the right to suspend, modify or discontinue, temporarily or permanently, the Account (or any part thereof) at any time and for any reason with or without notice. You agree that the University of Toronto shall not be liable to you or to any third party for any modification, suspension or discontinuance of the service.
