Please note that the Dinner with 12 Strangers event series is currently on-hold as part of a larger review of alumni programs and services. During this time, please explore the other volunteer opportunities available.

Invite U of T community members over for food and fun

Dinner with 12 Strangers – D12 – is one of our most popular and enjoyable programs. University of Toronto alumni, faculty, students or staff host a dinner in their home or another fun event - such as a hike, games night or trip to the museum - at another location of the host's choosing. The possibilities are boundless.

Help build a stronger more connected U of T community by volunteering to host! You'll meet interesting people and share fascinating conversation while enjoying a positive and memorable experience together.

What does hosting involve?

  • Welcoming guests into your home or at another location.

  • Covering the expenses of brunch, lunch or dinner, if you’re providing a meal.

  • Starting conversations and helping everyone to feel welcome.

  • The date, location, number of guests and theme of the activity are completely up to you.

What resources does U of T provide?

  • We can promote the dinner to U of T community members and handle the guest list.
  • We can provide guidance and advice to help everything run smoothly and ensure everyone has a good time.
  • We can arrange a space at U of T or another venue, if you aren’t in a position to host the event in your home.

Thank-you messages from participants

“I’ve had a fantastic experience with past D12 events — I’m blown away by the generosity and friendliness of our alumni.”

Honghu Wang, BComm candidate

“I’ve always enjoyed attending D12 events. The one last evening was no exception. The hosts were all friendly and welcoming, and the alumna hosted us in her beautiful apartment. The event was well planned, and I liked that the hosts had us all sit down and listen to each others’ stories—all very interesting.”

Robert Chu, fourth year Psychology student, Woodsworth College

“This event is a great opportunity to meet wonderful people, share your experience with them, and learn from their stories. It’s so much fun. And of course the food is awesome!”

Reza Fazeli, graduate student, Mechanical and Industrial Engineering

“After I attended my first D12 dinner, I realized it would be a good opportunity for students who might need guidance like what I needed in high school. It’s a great opportunity for students to meet people outside of our daily routines. It offers students a chance to explore more out of life by hearing others’ experiences.”

Chloe Feng, MASC. Candidate, Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry

“I had a great time meeting new people who are in the same stage in their career as me but also learning from those that are further ahead. This was a very valuable experience for me. Thank you for the opportunity.”

Athena Ionita, fourth year student, Life Sciences

“Last night was such a pleasure, meeting lovely new people, and having great conversations with delicious food. I give the experience a solid 10 and will definitely recommend it to my friends and fellow students.”

Joyce Hu, graduate student, Industrial Relations and Human Resources
