Poet and author Joanna Skibsrud

Johanna Skibsrud

(BA 2001 Victoria) has won the 2010 Giller Prize for her debut novel, The Sentimentalist. The book explores the relationship between an unnamed narrator and her father, Napoleon, who fought in the Vietnam War. It is according to The Globe “undoubtedly the most obscure book ever to win a major literary award in Canada,” having been hand-printed by a tiny publisher in Kentville, N.S., in an edition of 800 copies.
