Am I eligible for an email account?

If you graduated before 2012, and you are an alumni of the University of Toronto you are eligible to receive this type of alumni email account. More recent graduates will automatically receive an account as part of their UTmail+ email service. Please see for more information.

Are you phasing out email addresses?

We will eventually cease to create new email accounts, but we will continue to support all of our existing users. The reason for this change is that the University of Toronto selected Microsoft as the provider for all student and alumni email in 2011, following extensive consultations with students and the academic community.

All graduates since 2012 are automatically granted an address after convocation. In the future, any graduate of U of T will be able to request and receive an address. At that time, we will no longer be creating new addresses.


How do I access my alumni email through an email client (Microsoft Outlook, Thunderbird, Apple Mail, etc.) or a mobile phone?

Check out Google’s Gmail Help page to learn how to configure your alumni email account for email clients or wireless devices. Depending on your email client program, you may be prompted for the following information:

Can my alumni email account be forwarded to another account?

Yes. In the top right corner of any Google mail page, click on “Settings”, then on “Forwarding and POP/IMAP”, and forward the account as you please.

How do I access my alumni email account in places where Gmail is blocked?

Gmail services are blocked in certain countries. U of T cannot assist you with accessing your Gmail based account in these countries. We recommend you set up email forwarding to another mail provider if you plan to travel to these countries.

Privacy and Advertising

Can anyone at the university read my alumni email?

No. The University of Toronto and Google respect your privacy. A small group of trained U of T employees can access your account when you ask for help with resetting your password.

Will my alumni email account feature any Google-supplied ads?

No. All accounts and pages are free of Google-supplied ads.

Where are accounts physically located?

All accounts are stored in Google servers in the United States, along with other North American Gmail accounts.

Forwarding accounts

What should I do with my old account?

If you still have access, you can forward your address to another account such as you account. To set up email forwarding, follow the instructions at The university reserves the right to delete non-forwarded accounts within two years of the account holder’s departure from the university.


Returning students/staff and faculty

I’m a returning student/staff member/faculty member; can I keep my alumni email address as well as my address?

Yes. The two email accounts are separate, but can forward or share email if you configure them to do so.

Requesting a new account

If I request to change my account, what happens to the old one?

You can have one alumni e-mail address at a time. If, for any reason, you would like a different address, please e-mail Your alumni e-mail address will be updated within ten business days, and you will be notified via e-mail. All of your previous e-mail messages, attachments, contacts, and documents will automatically switched over to your new alumni e-mail account.
